Wet Dream - The Best of Max Romeo – TJACD164

Kicking of with the perennial Wet Dream, closing with the Dancehall remake from 1995. Most tracks however emanate from the period 1971 to 1973. Indeed this period was one of prolific ness and Max, particularly or especially in, Jamaica was able to concentrate more on what he wanted to, with more depth and consciousness, for in the Uk he was in a way stigmatised by the ‘slackness’ of Wet Dream.

We had things like Black Equality and Jordon River, Hola Zion songs of cultural struggles and piety. Using a mixture of produces including Bunny Lee and the Upsetter, himself and several others. Max possesses a distinctive voice, the tracks are all recognisable, all better than average, but they don’t hit the highest spots, there is nothing particularly outstanding. Solid, nice, good but it really should have been, ought to have been better than that.
