Lee Perry – Dub Triptych -  TJBDD172

Released 10 May 2004 – Disk 1  is Cloak and dagger part instrumental and part dub, whereas Disc 2 includes Blackboard Jungle Dub, widely recognised as being the first full dub album and Revolution Dub where Perry experiments further with mixing techniques.  All three albums have very limited previous release and this is the first time, with bonus track, on CD.

Elsewhere I have recently reviewed the Sly and Robbie Dub album, which quite frankly pales into insignificance when compared to this.  Whatever you think of Perry he certainly holds your attention, this is always (for a dub album which can get samey if not tedious and uninspiring) fresh and innovative, experimental and cutting edge.  Dub for me comes in threes, the technician dub like Tubby’s, the producer dubs like this and the artist dubs. The latter you can almost dismiss, the technicians tend to have the wizardry but less artistry, and so Perry and the like for me are the best.

Blackboard for me is the best set as it still sounds fresh and retains a catchy appeal in the rhythms whereas revolution is just that bit deeper and harder.  Excellent stuff though.
