Suge Knight on the Real – Death Row Records, the Only Authorized Program - WNRD 2113
Basically an interview with Suge Knight , head and founder of Death Row records, including some old clippings and interspersed with hip hop videos. The videos are cleverly sequences into the piece. This is broadly a documentary where Suge puts together his side of the 'story'.
Suge's basic concept, his ideals and philosophy are sound and if correctly actioned would have been laudable. It is difficult to see beyond the superficial as to actually how and where it all went wong
The Vision – the concept is outlined for the birth of Death Row. Initially it would be built around Dre's album Chronic which featured amongst others Snoop, Warren G, Nate Dogg and the Dogg Pound
The Foundation – The bricks on which this would all be based, how the label would be built around the artists unlike most (major) labels where it is the label that profits most.
The Loyalty - In return the artists would give loyalty to that vision
The Business – what would be done to help the artists, how at first they must get along, must have the same objectives. A large section here is based around how Tupac and how Suge 'saved' him initialy from incarceration.. This is what would be done for artist that fit.
The Incarceration – A section about incarceration, little is said about the reasons why, Suga reflects on life and how his thoughts of his upbringing helped him through. How he was comfortable in there in the way that it mirrored 'Ghetto' life, that this was wrong but the way it was.
The Ass Whoopin - How he was comfortable in there in the way that it mirrored 'Ghetto' life, that this was wrong but the way it was.
Rats and Snitches – Only at this point do we get to see reasons or possible reasons as to how the 'empire' was brought down at the hands of informers, and how the agencies got involved. There is no acceptance of blame or admission of any wrongdoing, just a blame on others. So what is true I don't know. As with Tupac there is an extended section on Dre
The Homecoming – shots of the release from prison and post release
interview, living high with Limos and planes.
