OK this was a Uk fashion trend but it was my era, but as with all cults it
was below the surface, below the visible media trendsetters and the outer
exterior, we dug deep. It wasn’t
the chart sounds or the more commercial tighten ups, we dug deep for elitism
and style. So a lot of these cuts
are a pure memory trip. This Cd is
less mainstream especially the first two CD’s -although there are some pretty popular sounds, and
especially names highlighted, and it is all the better for it. The set goes a bit wayward towards CD3
as commercialism set it and the suedehead moved on – a passing fad, of course
they all were/are.
The music the rhythm was in a sense kind of mellow, but it was hard – the DJ
was emerging and RG&G and sufferation – and joyous but deep. Personally I’m a sucker for the vocal
groups and the great voices so the likes of the Heptones, Tennors, Dennis Brown,
Alton Ellis, Cornell Campbell (especially) and Horace Andy do it for me. Some great DJ stuff though with Big
Youth, I Roy, Dennis Alcapone.
Pretty much a great set – anything with Cornell Campbell surely is even
though there’s only one track, and what a voice
