The Sound of Jazz ft Count Basie, Billie Holiday, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins and Red Allen - WNRD 2211
I have to say at the outset that this is at the periphery of my knowledge and expertise, yet it is a thoroughly enjoyable film. An old 57 CBS studio prrformance featuring some real heavyweights of jazz. Old black and white of course but with all the crackle taken out and yet retaining the feel of the performance. The pictures aren't brilliant but the overall joyousness of the performance and the performers overcomes this.
Different nuances of jazz are featured, like the big band Kansas City swing blues of Count Basie, the new Orleans blues of Red Allen, the vocal soul of Billie Holiday and so on.
Highlights for me is the slower bluesier tracks and not the big band. Red Allen's Wild Man Blues, particularly the mellow instrumentation, is excellent.
Not so keen personally on Count Basie (save for a great blues in I left my baby) there is no questioning his appeal and influence and his band here consisted of heavyweights such as Coleman Hawkin's and Gerry Mulligan.
Highlight for me of course is Billie Holiday, it always amazes me how easy her performance seems to be considering the power and pleading in her voice.
The theree bonus tracks are without any visual accompaniment.
Absolute talent, as this is pretty much freestyle and as pure as you can get.
