Nnenna Freelon - Soulcall - Concord Jazz Records

Undoubtedly a good singer and I could see myself mellowing out and thoroughly enjoying this at a cool jazz bar but for an album it's not really up my street. It is well sung and well produced but there is too much reliance on standards not only jazz but middle of the road. We've got things like 'Let it be me', 'Straighten up and fly right' 'Amazing Grace' 'I say a little prayer' 'Paper Moon'. To be fair Nnenna's delivery is such that she can and does offer something to these tunes but you can only do so much to some of these. @Button up your overcut' is good with a nice tenor sax solo.

On 'One child at a time' Nnenna comes into her own and the cut is enhanced by an appearance of the great Sounds of Blackness. Also a cool jazz version of Stevie's 'If it's magic' .
