I have to say that whilst I appreciate what it was and what it did, most of the two tone ska revival leaves me pretty cold. The redeeming factor however is its vibrancy which is still evident today. I guess the main reason I couldn't get it is the fact that I had grown up on original ska and most of this didn't add to it at all. Maybe for purist reasons I thought they were pale imitations. The other factor probably was my age!

I've mentioned the vibrancy, the dynamism, already and this comes across immediately in the live version of Missing Words by Selector. (but as a general rule I don't like the live tracks added in here, of typically hit songs , probably a ploy to use the name titles without having the rights to the original versions.)

Interesting and less well known early tracks are included by the Coventry Automatics, a precursor to the Specials, and whilst still ska based they retain a punk edge. All the mainstays of the genre are here, Specials, Beat, Selector, Bad Manners.

The best for me is a good version of Long Shot and Tighten up by Selector, Concrete Jungle by the aforementioned Automatics, and some cameos by Desmond Dekker. In retrospect the Selector tracks do most for me.

Compiled and annotated by Ska Revival aficionado, Mark Brennan, this 50 track box features a variety of tracks by some of the leading groups of the Two Tone era, highlighting a mixture of live and studio sides. With much of the material currently unavailable elsewhere, this compilation not only provides an ideal intriduction to genre, but will also appeal to those fans already committed to the Ska cause.
