Russell Simmonds - Journeys in Black – WNRD2186

Another fascinating documentary in the Journeys in Black series, with Russell Simmons. One of the kingpins in the development of Hip Hop. His vision of course was not only music related it was the whole lifestyle and he encompassed this into his entreupeneurism.

Based largely around vision, entreupeneurism, business, marketing and culture, and he made it work.

The docu takes it right from the early days of DJ’s Cheba and AJ, B-boy-ism, Graf, rap and turntableism on the South Bronx and picking up Kurtis Blow.

The label started with Rick Ruben.  The important thing from an early stage was control, then DMC and Jammaster J, through Cool J, Public Enemy, Beastie Boys.

This grew into a major empire encompassing Def Jam, Def Comedy, Phat Farm and more. The key to this as far as I can see was marketing.

Some excellent ineterviews and a good insight into the formation of Def Jam especially in the early days, and not hiding from the bad days.

Russell Simmons is the master visionary whose unlimited dreams has long shaped and been on the cutting edge of Hip-Hop. Simmons realised early on that Hip-Hop's appeal could cut across geographic, ethnic and class boundaries and that Hip-Hop would evolve from its roots of DJs, MC's, graffiti and break dancing in the streets of New York into a culture within itself.

Russell created business and entertainment franchises Def Jam Records, Def Comedy Jam, Def Poetry Jam and Phat Farm clothing. Urban Edge's BET's Journeys in Black gives Russell the stage to share with you his opinions and philosophies on Hip-Hop, fashion and business.
