Rockers -

WNR 2088 (Video) WNRD 2089 (DVD)

"Rockers tells the beautiful story of Leroy 'Horsemouth' Wallace and his struggle to succeed in Jamaica. Horsey lives in a Kingston ghetto with his wife and three children. Although considered the best drummer in Jamaica, Horsey remains in poverty because of the structure of the music business. When Horsey takes steps to improve his social standing the establishment strikes back to put him down. With the help of musician friends, Peter Tosh, Dennis Brown, Jacob Miller, Bunny Wailer and many others, Horsey stages an uprising which benefits all of the people from his community.

The film features various musical performances as well as a brilliant reggae soundtrack, now digitally remastered from the original 35mm film made in 1978. Included in the soundtrack is music by Burning Spear, Bunny Wailer, Third World, Peter Tosh, Jacob Miller, Gregory Isaacs, Kiddus I, Junior Murvin, Big Youth and Dillinger.

This movie captures reggae at its musical apex. Many legendary reggae stars appear in the movie, either playing starring roles or simply cameos. Rockers (WNR2088/WNRD2089)... A 'must have' for any dub wise rudeboy!

This is a great movie, one that I have always remembered but not really seen for about 25 years, although I have a vague recollection of seeing on the TV once. The whole thing has a laid back vibe to it, one that was prevalent in the late 70's as Rasta influenced Reggae music and took it over. The 'Rockers' style of reggae was slow beat, hard but rhythmic and deeply conscious. The lifestyle of the ghetto, trenchtown and beyond comes through.

The story is pretty straightforward, the struggle of Horsemouth the musician trying to get by, full of ideas to get out of the struggle but in the right way, seeing the badness in the record industry and beyond..........and ultimately becoming a latter day Robin Hood, as, selfish thoughts aside, he returns stolen goods to the people.

Against a backdrop of Island Life and some wonderful music, aaaaaaaand some great cameos by the stars of the day such as Cool Ruler Gregory Isaacs, Big Youth, Robbie Shakespeare, Burning Spear, Jacob Miller and Inner Circle and more.

On DVD ofc ourse we get excelent sound quality and visuals. Also there is the addition of some previously unreleased bonus tracks by the Rockers Band on Satta Amasagana, Man in the Street, Waiting for the Bus, Honeyball, The Beating, Rockers and The Raid.

Also the opportunity for some basic information about the people in the film and some reruns of the music is a nice touch just to play the audio. Also there is some additional information about the Island and Rastafari generally, although in a way I find the fact that the film is subtitled mildy offensive – oh well the wider audience!

All in all a wonderful package, great scenes, great music, moderate storyline but who cares, this is my era of reggae.
