Various Artists: Trojan Reggae Rarities Box Set (TJETD215)

Subdivided into 3 sections, Vintage Revive from 1966 to 1969, Superbad Sounds from 69 to 73, andUK rarities 70 to 78, ther eis some good stuff on here.  As it’s difficult to cover 50 tracks I’ll just select a few that I feel are standout and make a purchase worthwhile.

CD1 – Johnny Melody, latterly of the Pioneers does an exquisite Govern Your Mouth, which is pretty much worth the entrance fee all on its own.  Another absolute rarity is Austin Faithfuls wonderful Ain’t that peculiar.  Moving into later Reggae sounds the Young Souls harmonic Where did you leave is worth a listen. You can nevr go much wrong with Delroy Wilson and he’s so strong on th e simple Good to me.  By track 14 we’re well into the reggae arena and the Crashers Musical Fight is straight out of the (to Poppa) top drawer. The Soul Directions cut a wonderful Su Su Su, sounding like pre Rockers in a Tighten up stylee!

CD2 – Eroc Monty Morris and his Maples give a good vocal performance on No More teardrops.  Dave Barker does a very good )male) version of Lonely Man (Girl am I). Harry J’s DJ version by Lizzie of More Heartaches over the Beltones original. Of course must mention Slim Smith’s version of Billy Stewart’s Sitting in the Park. Also some rare Iroy’s The drifter.

CD3 – is the weakest of the three. But it kicks off well with Tony nash’s weet Keep on trying.  The Cimarons are also top notch on this early (for them) cut.
