Trojan Reggae Duets Box Set -

I have to say that I am not a great fan of this genre – not that I ever really considered it as a genre as such – but if you read reviews of the many reggae albums on this site, where a duet is included you will invariable notice that it usually doesn’t come high up in my estimation.   Why that should be I don’t know, but actually it remains my opinion even if you include American Soul duets.  That’s not to say there aren’t good ones but usually it’s a case of ‘ what’s the point?’

The worst are sickly pastiche sugary love things even if the artists are the top male and the top female singers.  I’ll just mention a few that I have enjoyed and this will exclude tracks that really have been big hits and carved out their own niche in Jamaican musical history (like Derrick & Patsy’s housewife’s choice).

Bob and Marcia if there were an exception to what I’m saying would probably be it.  Private Number oozes soulfulness and Young Gifted and Black is instantly recognisable for all the right reasons, the performance, the lyrics, the rhythm.  Stranger and Patsy’s easy laid back Come back deserves a mention, as does Make Good this time Stranger with Gladdy.  Keith & Tex’s Tonight is good.  As we move on in years into the more conscious period the duet gets a different identity, with the likes of Maxie and Niney, or Flowers and Alvin.

The rest are OK, pleasant but don’t grab me.
