Ras Reggae Box Set

Released on 16 February 2004.

As reggae moved into the electronic age in the 90s predominantly I lost interest a bit.  The music lost its feel, its depth, the arrangements felt empty and vacant.  The saving graces for me were the quality of some of the singers Dennis Brown, Freddie McGregor, Beres Hammond and groups like Israel Vibration, Wailing Souls.  Those that continued to sing with some Soul.  Most of the rest left me a bit cold and hey where were the ladeez.

This is the territory that we are in with Ras who despite my feelings did a huge amount to keep Jamaican fires burning.

That said theer are sufficient good tracks on here falling into the category of my personal appeal to make it worthwhile.  If you are a dancehall head there will be sufficient in that direction too.

The obligatory DB track is his rendition of Night Nurse.  The great Beres Hammond is represented with the commercial Putting Up Resistance.  Freddie McGregors distinctive voice over beautiful harmonies on Push Come to Shove.  One of the most distinctive vocal groups Wailing Souls and Dog Bite (very similar to Upfront), and also the Mighty Diamonds Gone Bad.  In my eyes not much emerging talent on the vocal front but one who did was Cocoa Tea, featured here with Rocking Dolly. Another newer (relatively) singer was Luciano who rarely fails to please. Jacob Milers Tenement Yard from the Rockers soundtrack. And back to the more traditional Gregory Isaacs.

Consciousness a plenty with the likes of Don Carlos, Israel Vibrations great Cool and Calm, Peter Broggs, Rastafari elders and the inimitable Culture.

Other tracks worthy of mention are little Kirks hard hitting Child Abuse, the Itals In a Dis Ya Time, Mystic Revealers Space & Time.

A few tracks go back into the 70s and 80s such as Black Uhuru, the Morwells Reggae Party, Melodian Irie Feeling

Dancehall wise Im afraid I go for the more commercial such as Tenor Saw or Michigan and Smiley, but there is also Beenie, Buju,  Sizzla, and from an old skool Eek a mouse and Yellowman and more.
