2001 Soul Odyssey - Various Artists - CDB EXP3

The latest in the tradition of four album compilations by Expansion. I imagine that this is a budget compilation and as such represents an incredible value. It takes you through a range of many expansion artists and covers smooth soul and r'n'b.

  • The set opens with 'groove on' by modern tribe, a beautiful lilting modern soul anthem. Side one also includes the beautiful Robbie'sDanzie's 'love undeniable' which is reviewed elsewhere on these pages on its single release. The track that I like best on this side is Richard Rogers 'keep giving me love', a mid-tempo modern soul groover. Also on this side is Kashif, Woody Cunningham, Khani Cole, Keni Burke, Kuh, A.J, Reggie Calloway, Genai, 'Places' by Khani Cole is another favorite, a lovely mellow soul jazzy ballad.

Richard Rogers is an artist that I particularly like and he deserves to go on to bigger and better things. Reggie Calloway of course of Midnight Starr is pure class.

Side two includes Nigel Martinez, Holloway, Camelle Hinds, Angela Bofill, 'my love is real' by Atlantic Star is the pick of this side - have they ever done a bad side? 'I don't want to lose it' by Josie James is also a beautiful track. Noel Elmowy's 'precious love' brings in the jazzier groove. Ronnie McNeir is also another track of class and style. Also included are some lesser names such as Nicole Jackson, Bob Baldwin and this trend continues onto disc three with the likes of Sam Moore, Craig Cooper, Keith Thomas, Nathan Heathman, Sani, Lewis Williams, but also includes Expansion bigger names like Rodney Mannsfield, David Lasley, Harrold Hewett. Sam Moore was new to me and her "round and round" is a nice, slow, funky little number.

Rodney Mansfield is a strong cut with his deep heavy vocal. David Lasley is probably my pick of this side.

There is also another quality soul track by Howard Hewett. The side ends on a great jazz vibe with Lewis Williams

Side four starts of with the magnificent, always in demand Patterson Twins, "gotta find a true love", followed by another hot cut by James King. Then follows Bobby Thurston-see the review further down the page for his excellent album. There is a bouncy track with Michele Gold featuring Grover Washington Jr in a modern soul groove. Not heard this before and it's a real good track! Another top sound is Andre de Lang with 'Finally', another big popular tune; the big name on this side is the great Leon Ware, with his Imitation; and closing the album is the great 'ender' and that is the jazzy vibe of jimmy Cobb , 'so nobody else can hear'.

The only minor gripe and I know it's only a cheap package but it would be nice to have some liner notes.

This is a magnificent album, of the kind of soul that Expansion are renowned for and as such is highly commended. This really is the finest smooth soul and r'n'b.
