Once again I , along with the group
would like to Thank You for this opportunity to “shine”.
Mike:
Tell me about the Klique & it’s philosophy.
Kyle:
Well Mike, Nu-Motion Klique besides being a group of friends just making good
music, is a “new movement in sound & spirit”. The philosophy, if there was
to be one, would be to create great music that will bless, groove & promote
healing in this crazy universe! That basically means we are going to be true to
ourselves & what we feel. Not so “trend” based.
Mike:
Who is it and how do you work together, seems that you have a little collective
there. Who are the core members, tell me a bit about them.
Kyle:
The groups core members are: Wendell “Chopper” Sewell (Guitars/Basses), Lisa
Vinson (Vocals), Cheri Grindler (Vocals), Andre Dion Wills ( Keys &BG
vocals), special guest Frankie “Soulman” Snowden (Vocals)and the late Debbie
Singletary Jordan (Vocals-Nov.23)
It’s very interesting working together because they
still play with other people/groups. Cheri & Lisa play with “Final Notice”
a local band I used to do sound & production for. Andre is an actor &
music theater person. He’s always doing shows or on the road with that. Frankie
is a Soul artist in his own right. He has had previous success as a writer &
artist. Wendell is a very “In Demand” session & road guitarist. Everyone brings their own
element to the table.
BUT there are a few new people who are going to be
aboard the next “trip”! Very excited!
Mike:
And yourself, is it your”brainchild”?
Kyle:
Yes, you could say that. I was blessed with the concept & vision.
Mike:
And who are your influences? Looks to me as if there are some “old skool”
influences in there. Is that what you draw from? But also what of the current
crop of artists?
Kyle:
I am highly influenced by the production greats of our time. As a child I
studied: Arif Mardin, Quincy Jones, Maurice White, James Anthony Carmichael
& Gamble& Huff. These men are truly VERSATILE . They always seemed to
STAY “outside the box” while yet “crossing over”. There are a few others that I
tuned in to later as I was in my mid-to-late teens & 20's like: Narada
Michael Walden, Prince, Barry White, James Brown, Kashif, Gene McDaniels, Vince
Montana & Jam & Lewis and so on. I am also a fan of the great session
cats too.
There are SOOOOOO many great ones out there!
The producer/writer/musician that I really
dig now is :”Bluey” Maunick & that whole movement. They are the complete
package. They do it ALL. No limitations, and I like that! I watch his every move AS A FAN & a
younger musician.
Now some of the new artists that I dig are: Jill
Scott, The Rebirth, Seek, Jeff Bradshaw, MAW, Galactic Motherland( or somethin’
like that), etc.( can’t name everybody)
Mike:
Tell me about the EP, there is a
pretty broad spectrum from the slow “Melody In My Mind” to the dance floor “The
Last Time”, the funky “Don’t drop The Ball”for example.
Kyle:
Yes, as a producer I wanted to touch the areas with music I liked to listen to
myself.
This EP was also purposely designed that way to give
the most for the money!
When I was younger, I worked in record retail for a
while & I realized the adult
customers sometimes wanted to experience different vibes at different times.
They would purchase usually more than one CD of different genres, such an Old
Skool Title & a new title. We combine it all without hopefully boring folk.
Mike:
What tracks are getting reaction at home & abroad??
Kyle:
The tracks that are getting great reactions here are: “ Melody In My Mind”,
“Maybe Next Time” & “ Participation”. Melody has gotten quite a few
comparisons to Rick James & Teena Marie duets. Maybe Next Time is getting
some props with the Smooth Jazz audience. Participation is getting some love
with the “Soul Line Dance” crowd. I actually tested the record in Chicago
through a “steppers” record pool before I released it in Philly. The reaction
was “crazy”, they were loving it! But at the time I did not have the $$ to
follow up like I should’ve. We have a “Line Dance” in Philly called the
Participation. A good friend & popular line dancer Bernadette Bernette
created it for us. It’s spreading too!
Abroad, we are getting so much love & respect !
We are slowly getting added to playlists all across the world. This is a
beautiful feeling. God’s blessing this thing!!
Mike:
Do you gig as a band and are you out doing promo?
Kyle:
We were doing dates last Summer & Fall as a “track”act so the momentum
would build on the record. But being as tho everyone has different commitments,
it had gotten a little hard to do. So we do it when special events come up. We
started rehearsing as a band in order to be ready for anything...like a tour of
the UK!!! The musicians we have around us are awesome.
Mike:
What’s it like doing this as an independent??
Kyle:
INCREDIBLE!! It feels so good to
put out something you believe in without someone (in most cases)who NEVER sold
a record to anybody or played on one, telling you what to do. A lot of new
music today sounds too similar. There needs to be more individualism. As we say
in the streets: DO YOU!!
The path that is carved is ours. So if there are
interested parties wanting license or “buy into” it, they know what’s going on
from the start. Sure, I’m open to suggestions, comments and even offers, but
until then, the final decision is mine. Yes, at times it is difficult without
the proper loot but I’d rather stand out & have a chance to be heard, than
to get lost in the shuffle before we even get a shot!
Mike:
What do you know about the UK scene?? “The Last Time” is the kind of track
that’s going to go well over here.
Kyle:
I LOVE & RESPECT the UK scene! I’ve been a HUGE fan for
many, many years. I am a fan of: Loose Ends, 52nd Street, Five Star
(ALL who were produced in Philly!), Sade, Soul to Soul, Cymande, Kajagoogoo,
Naked Eyes, Level42, Lights Of The World, Imagination, Mica Paris, Omar, D-Mob,
The Young Disciples, D-Influence and on & on & on... Oh Yea, Drizabone.
We are ALWAYS compared to them.
There is such a freedom & respect for Black
music there I would just love to visit & go to a “weekender”. ( Yes, I’m
taking any bids for sponsorship!)
One of the MAIN goals of this EP was to get it in
the UK. I felt that there would be an appreciation of the music. Actually, I
kinda felt the song “The Last Time” would do well there because it is based on
the Philly International sound which seems to be revered over there.
Mike:
So what’s happening next, are you putting together a full album??
Kyle:
We are working on another EP at the moment. It is the re-mix PLUS follow up to
Vol.1.
I like putting out EP’s instead of “full” cd’s
because they are not only cost efficient to the consumer, but I do not want
to BORE the audience with 16 songs
of 5 basic grooves. It’s like the comic book concept. We want to keep our fan’s
ready for the next adventure! Hahaha!!
Mike:
And the label Nu-Momentum, that’s you as well I assume. Do you have other
artists that we should be looking out for? Maybe the people in the group are
working on individual projects?
Kyle:
Yes, Mike. I am responsible for the label. Some of the projects to look out for
are: Machismo Bandits feat. Diva Lis. This is a House/Garage spinoff of
Nu-Motion Klique. Also Wendell & Lisa have BOTH started solo projects. The
material is very, very good so far.
Mike:
You write all of the songs, is that right?
Kyle:
I write & co-write for Nu-Motion Klique & Machismo Bandits. For the solo
projects the artists write their own expressions. Only if asked will I
contribute there. But I do help produce.
Mike:
Tell me about your background, where are you from, where are you now, what do
you do & what do you like??
Kyle:
Hey Mike, are you sure you don’t work for the F.B.I.?!?
Ok, I grew up in a small suburb of Philadelphia
called Norristown.. This is currently where I live & record. I also live
near another Soul legend Cliff Nobles. (He lives right across the street).
As a child I grew up collecting records, reading the
liner notes & music trades. I played & sang in Church & school
bands. I also Dj’d really heavy at one time. I still get asked to do some
engagements. I started writing at 11-12 years old. I started recording demos at
16-17 years old.
I worked odd jobs to pay for studio time when I
started. I worked my way up to operating the studio. I recording & produced
almost every kind of genre to”eat”.
I’ve been blessed to have written & worked with
some of the old skool great writers. They pushed me to give more to get more. I
also have worked in record retail & radio promotion.
I love R&B soul music, eating great food,
dancing, etc.( feels like I’m looking for a date!)
Recently, I just quit my job working in the
insurance field. I want to come to the UK to visit, can someone out there help
me! Hahaha!! But seriously, I’d love to visit & possibly live there for a
while.
Mike:
What’s the music scene like where
you are from??
Kyle:
It has it’s great points & It’s clique-ish Bull like anywhere else.
Right now in America in general it lacks something
real. I truly believe it is in serious transition right now. Talent & SONGS
have to return in order for the companies to make any money.
Mike:
Anything you’d like to add??
Kyle:
Yes, I like give some “shout outs” to the following people who help Nu-Motion
Klique out!
Alan Johnson, Lin Taylor, Dyanna Williams & Dr.
Craig White, Peter Young, ALL of the DJ staff of the FORMER Soul24-7.com, Solar
