Murder Was the Case

"Out of circulation for six years and now available for the first time on DVD format, Snoop Doggy Dogg's video movie, Murder Was The Case, from Death Row Records/ Suge Knight Films, is released on both video and DVD format on 6 August 2001 by Urban Edge. Murder Was The Case is released with two Snoop Doggy Dogg videos, "Midnight Love" and "Head Doctor" that were not part of the original package but come from the rapper's recently released (and best-selling) Death Row Records collection, "Dead Man Walkin'".

Included in Murder Was The Case are behind-the-scenes footage of Snoop Doggy Dogg and material from "Soul Train," "The American Music Awards" and "Saturday Night Live" , all featuring the rapper. Says Suge Knight, founder and owner of Death Row Records: "This was Snoop's first movie and it was also the first piece of directing done by Dr. Dre.  Both of them were on Death Row and on top of their game at the time. This is a real piece of rap history that is still important, saying something real, today." A tough, uncompromising and uncensored view of street and gang life, Murder Was The Case arrives in stores with lots of extras, including enhanced sound and image, additional Snoop Doggy Dogg videos and (another bonus) the "Director's cut" of Dr. Dre and Ice Cube's "Natural Born Killaz".

The new DVD release of Murder Was The Case has an extended running time, enabling a whole new audience of rap fans to experience a unique piece of rap history. Murder Was The Case (WNR 2107 & WNRD 2108) raps into a video store near you on 6 August 2001."

Though in movie format this is basically a showcase for Snoop Doggy Dogg. The whole thing has a laid back lazy west coast street style and feel to it as typified by Dogg's style. Mellow rap at it's very very best.

Great performance by Snoop and Dre, both musically and cutting this thing together. Ok so it's principally the music that drives this but you get more that you would see on MTV as this is R rated, you get full uninterrupted videos aand all this enhances the whole thing.

The interviews with Snoop are honest and profound. Apart from the realities of black youth culture and life in general but in South Central in particular, musically what comes through is a massive respect and knowledge for the old skool. This is evidenced in what is said and the samples but also the funky old skool retrospective images.

The package is built around the short feature Movie Murder was the case where some of the street murder killing scenes are very chilling, and Dre on production excels. The silence chills but Doggs mellow beats and intelligent raps cast an eerie backdrop. The whole package begs the question where does the reality end and the fiction begin!

The movie has intelligence, humour, positivity and reality.

Enhanced by the additional uncut videos including the immense Natural Born Killaz with Dre and Cube but also Bow Wow Wow, Midnight Love.

Stop the violence, drop the guns and increase the peace.
