Millie – Time will tell –

Released 15 March 2004

This album is built around the 1970 album Time will tell, issued in it’s full format.  This album contains a couple of good tracks and a couple of interesting tracks, but the CD package is enhanced by the 15 bonus tracks giving a better profile of Millie’s career which, of course, started with a bang in 1962.

On the actual album the most popular tracks were My Love and I and Mayfair.  The former is pretty good and typifies the era.  There was some smart comment on the album, which may have been just to be part of what was happening – the awful White Boys and response provocative Enoch power.  The title track is about the best.

The bonus tracks take us back through the years to earlier rhythms.  We’ll meet, You’re the Only one, Marie and Oh Merna with Roy Panton an American styled duet with Millie’s harsh girlie voice tempered by the soothing tones of Roy and some great sax.  Couple of uninspiring duets with Jackie Edwards.

Moving onto Soul territory, actually recorded in New York, with the ballad That’s how strong my love is, an ok version of a great song, to a pure stomping Northern Soul outing My Street and the slightly mellower Mixed Up Fickle Lonely Self Centred Spoiled kind of boy, and the Ikettes Peaches and cream.  Ooh Ooh is also a fine duet with Jackie Edwards.  Millie’s voice tends to be a bit too shrill for me but this section on the album is for me far and away the best.

At the later end of the 60’s there is also You better forget and three nights a week, I’ve been around and Honey Hush before being picked up by Eddie Wolfram for the main album.

Time Will Tell marked a change in Millie's fortunes. Featuring the big club hit, 'Enough Power', and such popular sides as 'My Love And I' and 'Mayfair', the best-selling album illustrated she could still be relevant to the blossoming Jamaican music scene in the UK. Sadly, it proved a false dawn and personal problems resulted in her withdrawing from the spotlight soon after its release. Now, 34 years after its original release, the LP is available once again, both in its original vinyl format and as a CD, with the latter containing an amazing 14 bonus tracks.
