Lee McDonald - Sweet Magic - SBCS14

A very in demand album from 1981 or thereabouts on the Debbie label out of New Jersey. Very difficult to find in it's original vinyl format commanding a price of several hundred pounds.

Contains something for 70's Northern and Modern Soul fans alike. We have a grooving 'We've only just begun' and whilst I would normally dismiss covers of material like this, this is well worth a listen. Northern wise in a 70's midtempo vein there is the cracking 'I'll do anything for you', originally cut by Ecstacy, Passion and Pain.

The title track is here in vocal and instrumental form, allowing a strong but mellow vocal to illustrate the quality that will follow. Again on 'Slow Down' the strength of the vocal eases into the female chorus and this one drives along. 'Let's Play Luck' has a fledgling disco beat and is probably the weakest cut.

'Show me' brings it down and cuts to the quick on a building climactic intense deep soul outing. 'Gotta get home' includes a monologue of the old school to bring home the message.

A sublime album with not a dud track in evidence, quality soul.
