Bob Marley & the Wailers – Roots of a Legend-  TJODX176 –

OK this has been done before, and once again there is much interest in Marley material because of the deal recently done and the fresh material emerging.  That said this is still top stuff. The material still sounds so fresh and current.  I don’t know if or how this has been cleaned up but it sure is hard.  Nothing much to add as the material is so familiar, certain tracks will mean certain things for certain people.  Some I have tired of a bit (Lively up yourself, small axe) but others I still crave(Trenchtown Rock, Kaya, Concrete Jungle, Soul Rebel, Herbsman, Soul Shakedown).

I just wish that it included my personal favourites War and Jah Live.

And it is enhanced by an excellent DVD.

There were many phases in Bob Marley's extraordinary career. Remember his enduring work with Island Records, the time when Marley became a global superstar? Hits from that period are brilliantly captured here on the DVD included in Roots Of A Legend. Yet, for many reggae fans, it was the recordings he made on the cusp of the Seventies that properly define Marley's special genius. That crucial period, from 1969 onwards, is celebrated on Roots Of A Legend. These were uncompromising songs that totally transformed the possibilities of popular music; firece, committed, tender and honest. Nothing in Bob Marley's long career ever surpassed the quality of his work at this time - the joy of a great artist on a creative roll, working with great producers as Bunny Lee, Leslie Kong and, especially, Lee 'Scratch' Perry.
