Phil Perry - Magic - Peak Records

Phil Perry - More information - Phil Perry

Whether singing in the mid range or in the high spots Phil's voice is absolutely crystal clear. His voice rings clear and true throughout this album of mellow grooves. Opening with the title track 'Magic' and following with my favourite 'Spirit of Love' the album sets out it's feel and it's direction. Most of the album is penned by Phil (and Barry Eastmond or Russ Freeman or Chris Davis) but a couple of Isley things are thrown in for good measure with Lee Ritenour producing the excellent 'Groove with you'.

'I can't wait' changes the style with a sparser arrangement and a more strained vocal style - bit more 'urban' maybe - nice. The beautiful falsetto led vocal on 'More of your sweet love' is also one of the standout cuts.

'All of my days' is a deep and soulful ballad. 'You'll never know is more uptempo and jazzy. We have Brazilian syles of 'Perfect Island Night' and the album closes with Lee Ritenour's ballad 'In the morning'.

All the songs are well written and delivered with style and produced well. A lovely warm soulful album from one of the great voices.
