Luther Vandross – Journeys in Black WNRD 2177

"Say the name 'Luther' and record buyers the world over respond immediately. The fact is, Luther Vandross remains the pre-eminent black male vocalist of our time. The five-time Grammy winner, whose cumulative global sales top over 20 million copies, has been offering his distinctive brand of satin smooth vocal magic to international audiences year in and year out.

This DVD takes you backstage and behind the scenes to explore the man behind one of the greatest voices in the history of music also starring Dionne Warwick, Whitney Houston, Alicia Keys and Eddie Murphy"

A detailed interview with Luther outlining his career and life, from early childhood through to present day.

A honest and informative interview, particularly interesting for outlining the early years in New York City, the Bronx and Harlem. Interesting to note that two of his favourite acts were Baby Washington and the Shirelles but the artist who he really admires is Dionne Warwick.

Dionne amongst others like Whitney Houston, Alicia Keyes, Roberta Flack, Ashford and Simpson, Clive Davis, David Bowie and Tyrese are interviewed and add flavour to the programme.

Lots of old pictures and anectodes flavour the programme. Did you know for example that Luther was on the very first ever Sesame Street in October 1969. Also some of the lead parts for Chic and then of course Change.

The story is told of the ups and downs, the difficulties of getting his first contracts and his weight problems, rumours of his death and family bereavements, are not overlooked.

There are a great number of clips from his songs and given that this is a stoty about Luther and his immaculate voice it would have been nice to have a few songs in full without interruptions. Nonetheless a very enjoble documentary of one of contemporary Black music's most important singers.
