Kirk Franklin – Journeys in Black WNRD 2172

"Kirk Franklin is a Gospel music sensation - the first Christian artist ever to reach Platinum sales with his most recent album Nu Nation Project and his single STOMP has sold over 3 million units, being the No.1 top selling Gospel record in the history of Gospel music.

With his contemporary Hip-Hop music style mixed with traditional gospel choir arrangements he has become the latest gospel music sensation.

In this DVD Kirk talks about his childhood and being in the choir, making music videos and movie soundtracks as well as performing live in concert."

Another in the Journeys in Black series. These are TV styled documentaries and built around an extensive interview and commentary from the artist themselves, with key figures interjecting. Many songs are featured and highlighted but they would do better to include full videos rather than talking over them, or even adding wo or three tracks at the end.

Now if your not familiar with Kirk Franklin then this is as good a place as any to start. The interview is refreshing and a far from the norm perception of Gospel music. Kirk is very determined in what he does and nothing will divert him from his chosen career bath. That said he is not afraid to shirk his upbringing, past and his roots. The story broken down into, Stomp to Success, A rough childhood, Someone to love, perils to success, Unforeseen tragedy, Mission continues.

The single Stomp has become enormous within it's genre and beyond. The Gospel of Kirk Franklin is not mainstream or old sckool gopel as it embraces elements of hip hop and street beats, cultures and sensibilities, yet it is charismatic, fresh, uplifting and evangelical.

Kirk of course is responsible for the movie Kingdom Come, utilising Mary Mary who are also featured in this documentary together with many other Gospel artists. Certainly whether Gospel is your thing or not Kirk's positivity comes across in this piece.

Kirk also lays down some thought provoking commentary regarding Gospel music and it's commercialisation and position in life, and how tragedy almost ended things and how it was overcome.
