Gregory Isaacs – Open the Door - Ras Records
First 7 tracks mixed by Calvin So So Francis, the rest by Gussie
P. Sparse but ample backing, all in a lazy groove which suits pefectly
Gregory’s style, once which has been honed to perfection and a certain
uniqueness over the years.
The album is therefore typical of what you would expect, nothing
groundbreaking or earth shattering, but pretty nice nonethless.
The title track Open the Door, is credited to Isaacs, but is Open
the Door to your heart, the oft covered but first 1966 Revilot release, written
bu Darrell Banks (although I have heard that Donnie Elbert stakes a claim to
it). This happens a lot with Jamaican releases. A fine version though of a
cracking song.
For me the album picks up in the second half, with a slightly
rootsier vibe on the horns and backing harmonies, Down the line and Sametime
being particularly good,
One for lovers and gregory isaacs fans.
