Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five - The Message CMRCD575 -

Released on 21 October 2002.

Much in a similar way as the Sugarhill album the perception of this album is built around 'The Message' and the fledgling rap release. In actual fact there is much more to the album that that style or sub genre.

'She's fresh' is an out and out funk monster, hard Bootsy like bassline and some real funky horns. Barely a rap in sight. 'It's Nasty' introduces the rap style over a sparse funky beat. 'Scorpio' is more discofied

'Its ashme (MT Airy Groove) uses the Spinners 'It's a shame' which has been sampled many times over the years but this was one of if not the first.

'Dreamin' is a good Stevie Wonder ballad also dedicated to the great man and 'You are' is an even better one with a fine lead vocal with an old skool monologue type 'rap' in there.

'The Message' is of course immense, groundbreaking, rap with social commentary, pioneering scratch and DJ techniques. These techniques never, at this point in history, more in evidence than on 'Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the wheels of steel' with a mass of sampling techniques.
