Full Flava – Colour of my Soul

featuring – Carleen Anderson, Beverlei Brown, Hazel Fernandes, Donna Gardier, Romina Johnson, Alison Limerick, Donna Odain, Ce Ce Peniston

Full Flava are Rob Derbyshire and Paul 'Solomon' Mullings, ably assisted on backing vocals throughout by Tee. Written (bar the cover of Nature Boy) and produced by the duo and assisted by principally the vocalists, who are a fine selection of female soul singers. There are two tracks by each of Carleen, Alison and Ce Ce and one by the others.

The over vibe on the album is pretty mellow and soulful, the standout cut for me is Beverlei Brown, maybe because I feel it has a groove that will be popular out there right now in the popular Soul haunts, Beverlei's vocals being ever powerful over the laid down groove and vocal layerings of Tee. Hot on it's heels is Alison Limerick's Perfect Love which is quite commercial but the vocals are again distinctive and strong.

However Dome have gone initially with Stories by Carleen Anderson as a single, again a well known voice in the UK particularly, deeper jazzier feel to the vocal but the beat is strong. Also a Remix version on the single which is sparse indeed and acoustically strong but very choppy. Also included is the second cut 'You are' which actually I marginally prefer.

Romina on 'Round and round' is in some ways reminiscent to her outing of a year or two back 'Never Do', same kind of commerciality. Donna Odain is a new name starts off with a misleading 'Superstition' type riff but it builds into a very good track, a warm voice and one of the tracks I can feel the possibility of an R'n'B remix. 'Nature Boy' with Hazel Fernandes is very well sung, is a very good song, but I dunno in this context.

I don't know an awful lot about the detail of Ce Ce Peniston's career but my perception is a strong vocalled diva. In that respect therefore I was pleasantly surprised with her two tracks, they fit in well and she is allowed to put in a mellow soulful performance, which I would say suits her better. Not much to choose between the two tracks but For my Baby probably just edges it for it's commercial edge.

Staying within the Dome family, and last but not least, the title track is given over to Donna Gardier. More of a ballad but the song with vocals prominent and music more laid back perfectly sums up the entire album.
