The Maytals – From the Roots

Released on 17 November 2003. -

Wonderful stuff, absolutely wonderful. Unmistakably Maytals, from rhythms to the raucous gospel of Toots. These tracks were 'discovered' in 1973 when Trojan trawled the vaults on the Maytals being signed to Island, to see what they could come up with. They found some lost tapes of tracks cut for Leslie Kong some 4 years earlier. An album was released back then and is featured in full together with some other previously unreleased cuts and outtakes.

I don't know what to say really it is all joyous, raw, yet rich. Fun (pee Pee Cluck Cluck), Rootsy (African Doctor), Worldly (Give Peace a chance), Conscious (Thy kingdom come), spiritual (Israel). It's just goodtime Maytals.

No good tracks, they all are. There's something about the vibe, the rhythm that is so uplifting, and the flatness of the vocal, and the sweet harmonies, and the way it all hangs together. Simply unique, uplifting, soulful. No one has ever replicated and no one ever could
