Frank McComb – The Truth - Expansion UK

This is going to be one of the albums of the year. Produced by Steve Hardy and I feel a lot of credit must go there. Not to diminish the excellence of Frank McComb of course, but somehow the whole vibe comes across as being easy, effortless yet slick, not overcooked just cool. This technique allows the strength of frank's songs and his own style to shine through.

Shine kicks us off in a fairly upbeat fashion, easy mellow vocals and particularly jazzy. You'll probably not see a review of Frank McComb without at least a passing reference to Donny Hathaway, so why should I be an exception. Whatcha gonna do again is upbeat , again with keys prominent but the added dimension of the wonderful Ledisi on backup and the EWF Horns. Old skool in a Songs in the key of Life kind of way.

Never letting go is a cool ballad, tinges of Stevie Wonder, Do you remember is mildly funky, with good keyboard work by Frank. After the intro fools you into thinking that this is going to be the slowest of killer ballads, Fools picks up into a meatier offering, complete with funky jazz fender and skats.

Billy Preston guests on a couple of tracks including Action speaks louder than words, again reminiscent of past days, but lets home future days as well, as soul needs a shot in the arm. Cupid's Arrow adds another dimension with a Latin flavor.

Not quite the best till last (but almost), prominent Billy Preston Hammond, Better of Without you part penned by Brigette McWilliams is a slow but funky ballad that builds from beat 1 in this 6 and a half minute epic with pleading heartfelt lyrics.

The finest Californian Soul, the Truth
