OK Fred – Errol Dunkley - TJACD190
This album straddles the period from 1963 to 1979 when he went big in the UK with the commercial hit OK Fred , but it really is the early material that is much better. Errol possesses a sweet strained and soulful voice and this is evident on mellow easy grooves like You’re gonna need me from 1967. In fact this Joe Gibbs period is really excellent, and even within the constrains of the style of the day there is much variety. Love Brother at the end of the Joe Gibbs period is also very good.. Apart from a couple of covers the tracks were also written by Errol himself.
The earliest track cut in 1963, a frantic duet with Junior English, but a maturity comes through despite a young voice by about 1966 or 1967.
Different styles and differenet producers were used, Duke Reid, Bunny Lee (My special prayer being particularly good) before he decided to produce himself. As we moved in to the reggae rockers time and the slower rhythm suited the voice very well, but whilst being good were never strong enough until becoming very commercial. That said Personally I like this period very much, Baby I Love you for example is an awesome track.
