Dennis Brown sings Gregory Isaacs Ras Records
Released on 24 November 2003. - The details from Ras Records are shown below.
I enjoyed this more than I thought I would Two heavyweights of Reggae, my era of reggae really, one covering the other, I wasn't sure whether it would work. Both have distinctive voices, would one suit the other and especially on songs that the other made his own. Well actually it works, these are distinctively DB even though the songs are familiar.
Sometimes it works too well, in that for example, Love is overdue, seems to me to be better than Gregory's version. Maybe it's less frantic and coming from a later style and a later era, but it sure is good here, whereas it wasn't one of my favorite Gregory cuts. Conversely some tracks will remain always Gregory tracks, such as Top ten, Night Nurse and My number one, and that's not to diss these version.
All I have is love, Soon Forward and Front door, seem to suit Dennis's vocal particularly.
An enjoyable romp through some great tunes.
