COOLY'S
HOT BOX - TAKE IT - CD28
This is
Cooly's debut album on Dome scheduled for release on September 24. I have come
across Cooly's previously mainly as a Soulful House act. This album contains
Soul, Funk, Jazz and Dance but is more Soul than Dance.
I have
already gone on record - the Modern Soul Internet Group - as saying that It's
alright is one of the tracks of the year to date - a wonderful slab of top
quality Soul fronted by the vocals of Angela Johnson over a throbbing funky
beat with backing and upfront harmonies - if that makes sense. This will go big
in the upfront Soul venues.
'Simple'
sees Christian Urich on vocals, and Over and Over brings Angela back in on this
jazzy duet. 'Take me home' picks up the pace again. 'Take it' the title track
and the first of two slow moody ballads. The latter in a Rahsaan Patterson kind
of vibe.
'Make me
happy' is on an old skool - Chaka stylee. 'Friend of mine' is a dance killer
cut which I have been playing throughout the summer at Brannigans.
'Wasted
Time' has some lovely harmonies and is a bit more 'urban' - Nice cut. 'Let me
get some' is back in a jazzy vein. 'What a surprise' another Angela led ballad
- the more you listen the more you can hear the influences - there's a bit of
EWF in here. 'I'm in love with you' shows off Angela's vocal to the fullover a
simple low key backing.
'Happy
Feelings' brings the pace back up over a funky jazz piano, and 'Dimelo Siempre'
ends on a latin beat.
I don't
know if this takes the Cooly's where they want to be but I would guess so, and
hope so.
An
excellent album with some killer cuts and one exceptional. Miss it at your
peril.
