Dome Cookin – A Second Helping of Hot
Soul Platters- Dome CD44
Dome have
created something that is defined and focused. The labels reputation for
quality well produced soul music is being enhanced by the day. This album
includes 17 such tracks covering a period from about the mid 90's to now.
All the
Dome heavyweights are included and you will see various features of some of
them all over this site. Not that everything is the same Andreus for Dome is
probably the most unlikely, Tasha is another direction but Peter Robinson has a
finger on the pulse and the connections to make the whole thing gel together so
nicely. One day he will the label will get it's just deserve when something
goes massive. There are artists her that have the potential top do that and my
hope would be that Dome is able to take them there, and for them not to be
poached away by a caring less profit motivated label.
The pick of
the artists for me are Angela Johnson and Andreus with Tasha not far behind.
Kelli Sae also I would hope to see in that category before too long. Personally
I lean towards the US artists – I always have – and nothing here changes that
fact. That's no disrepect for the UK crews in evidence as there are some
quality professional cuts on here.
Most of the
tracks are featured on reviews of the individual artists on the site. A special
mention however for the opening track, a wonderful piece of uplifting gospel
soul 'Keep on blessing me' by Donald Lawrence & the Tri City Singers.
An
introduction to a new artist is included Avani, from South London and putting
together her first album with producer Shaun Stanley.
I would get
the albums wherever you can but this compilation should help if you cannot.

If you enjoyed your first taste of ‘Dome Cookin’
in 2002, we’ve decided to follow it with a second collection. Like the first
one, it’s a limited edition released at an absolute giveaway price The 17
tracks span the past, present and future of the label, with upfront cuts from
albums by UK soul vocalist Avani and Incognito singer Kelli Sae, as well as a
slice of gospel soul from Donald Lawrence and the Tri-City Singers. Among the Dome classic cuts included are the
Full Crew remix of Dennis Taylor’s “Bad As You Wanna Be”, the VRS remix of
Hil St Soul’s “Nostalgia”, Drizabone’s reworking of Lulu’s “There Has Got To
Be A Way” and an acoustic version of Angela Johnson’s “Sad Days”. The Donald Lawrence gospel cut “Keep On Blessing
Me” – licensed from the same stable as another recent Dome artist Darwin
Hobbs – samples Evelyn Champagne King’s “Love Come Down”, while New
Jersey-based Incognito vocalist Kelli Sae contributes “Can’t Wait”. South London newcomer Avani, currently recording
a debut album for Dome with producer Shaun Stanley, offers the hypnotic “The
Real Thing” by way of an introduction. Avani is managed by Tony Hall, who has
guided such notable UK artists as Loose Ends and Lynden David Hall to
success. Among the other Dome acts featured are
D-Influence and Shola Ama, Incognito, Tasha’s World and Donna Gardier. |
