Dandy and the Brother Dan Allstars – Let's catch the beat – The music that launched the legend

Released on 8 September 2003.

Trojan is 35 years old and Dandy Livingstone aka Robert Thompson was heavily involved on some if not most of the initial releases, all of which are featured here. %% tracks from Dady or the Brothers Dan All Stars with appropriate 'guests' from time to time like Owen Grey, Denzil Dennis, Winston and Pat and more.

All the tracks from 1968 and obviously all sound typical of that era, upbeat early reggae style that British youth was picking up on and stomping around the dancehalls and elsewhere. The initial Trojan album was Follow the Donkey, followed by Dandy Returns, and both are included in full. Dandy was an inspired choice really because he styling was easy and commercial, as evident in Follow that Donkey. Both these album are now much in demand in their original format.

Dandy's commerciality dictates that some, particularly instrumentals, sound very like touristic hotel lounges, but elsewhere the soul stylings of the sweet vocals override this and tracks like Tears in my eyes and soul covers like You send me are excellent.

Owen Grey guest on some tracks and unsurprisingly these are amongst the better tracks, Show me baby and Answer Me.

All the tracks were cut within the space of a year which shows how prolific he was and the material is varied enough both lyrically and musically to cover all the nuances of the scene at that time, such like the Prince Buster tribute with excellent sax, and the male group vocal stylings on the superb Daddy is home and the dancehall Doctor Sureshot and Gallop, DJ on The Toast. I also particularly like the Jivers tracks, simple but harmonic vocals.

Dandy was a follower not a leader, not an innovator but a competent and distinguished stylist professional I would say, but there is much to enjoy

To celebrate Trojan's 35th anniversary, we proudly present the recordings that set the ball rolling back in the summer of 1968. The company's launch was heralded by a series of singles and albums produced by Britain's best-loved 'Jamaican' music producer, Dandy, and here, on this double CD set, 54 of those historic tracks are gathered. The end result is two and a half hours of great music - and a fascinating insight into Trojan origins.
