The Return of the Blues Brothers - WNR 2064

A live recording in Blues Brothers style recorded on 24 January 1995, the details from Wienerworld are repeated below.

Mostly very much typical Blues Brothers, the band are toght and real as you would expect, the film standards are included. The piece is enhanced with the likes of Sam Moore (of Sam and Dave) performing the likes of When Something is Wromg with my baby and Soul Man.

Mostly Classics of Soul from the golden era but in this live perforance there is more, pover and above typical Blues Brothers. For me some of it works some of it doesn't. The expected stuff is fine. There is a great versions of Hey Joe and Moment of Silence (each very diverse in application), Katey Segal puts in a good performance.

However The Animal and Coconut do not work for me at all. The heavy guitar work is so out of place and as competenet as it may be is neither bluesworthy or soul worthy (IMHO!)

"It's been a long time coming, but the wait is finally over! On A Mission From God, The Blues Brothers stormed onto the nation's screens with their home video premiere on 9 September 1996 of The Return Of The Blues Brothers which entered the UK Music Video Charts at #11.

From Joliet Illinois, Elwood Blues (Dan Aykroyd) returns to the shimmering limelight with brothers Steve Blues (James Belushi) and Mighty Max Blues (John Goodman) fronting an array of illustrious guests for a mean, lean blues-filled evening celebrating the birthday and spirit of gone-but-not-forgotten Joliet Jake Blues (John Belushi).

Filmed live at the world-famous House Of Blues, Sunset Strip, Los Angeles on 24 January 1995, this superb collection is the first new material from The Blues Brothers in over a decade. With John's brother, James Belushi and Roseanne favourite, John Goodman joining Dan Aykroyd, fans of the cult band will get a taste of what is in store for them in 1997 when the trio will be starring in their new Hollywood blockbuster, Blues Brothers 2000.

Key musicians Jeff 'Skunk' Baxter (ex Doobie Brothers), Tom Scott, Buddy Miles, and Booker T & The MGs guitar virtuoso, Steve 'The Colonel' Cropper head the superb backing band which kicks-in and pushes The Blues Brothers to even greater heights. Sam ( Sam & Dave) Moore struts onto the stage and joins The Blues Brothers to sing a cracking rendition of his signature Soul Man, whilst classics including Sweet Home Chicago, Flip Flop & Fly, and the essential Money (That's What I Want) all fall to the might of The Blues Brothers.

This great evening, shot at The House Of Blues, also includes strong performances from other artists specifically chosen by The Blues Brothers to reflect the widest range of music possible within the blues/soul spectrum. Featured acts include top Italian star, Zucchero, Steve Vai and also Katey Sagal.

Backed by authentic R&B stars like Cropper, The Blues Brothers recorded their first album, A Briefcase Full Of Blues, which topped the US Album Charts in 1978 and included the US Top 20 single Soul Man, featured here. The project, which was originally launched as a novelty vehicle for US comedians Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi, went on to become a smash hit and then a feature film The Blues Brothers, which is a cult favourite to this day. Though compilations have been created from various TV shows in an attempt to resurrect the band, this is the first time in over a decade that The Blues Brothers have been captured playing live for all to enjoy. John Belushi died in 1982 and this super concert, recorded on his birthday, captures the spirit not only of the late seventies and early eighties when the band was at its peak, but also the heat and passion of sixties soul.

Meanwhile, Goodman easily fits the bill as Blues Brother #3, and looks like he was born to wear those trademark Foster Grant sunglasses and pork pie hat. His added dimension is certain to inject a new lease of life into the band.

John Landis has announced that he will be directing the new Blues Brothers movie Blues Brothers 2000 with Belushi, Aykroyd and Goodman. The Return Of The Blues Brothers is a great taster of things to come.

The Return Of The Blues Brothers is available in Woolworths, W H Smith, HMV, Virgin, Our Price and Tower, as well as most video and music stores of taste in the United Kingdom. However, if you are unable to buy a copy at a UK store or place an order with a retailer, please follow the simple order instructions to buy this great music video, or any other music videos from the Wienerworld catalogue, delivered direct to your door.

Whilst an ad for the video will also appear in Q's December edition, which will hit the streets on 1 November 1996, we'd love to have sightings of the posters in your area (send to: bbsightings@wienerworld.com).

So, turn up the music, on with those pork pie hats and sunglasses, and remember

In Blues We Trust!"
