Blackbeard Production – too much iron in the fire -  TJDDD163 –

Well actually this album sums up as much as any album has to date what it was like in the dancehall arena at the time when I was going to these kind of things.  Yes I had been earlier in the ska days, revival time, studio one and so on.  But about 1974 to 1984 I was actually going out to see live bands, current reggae, Hanging with my man D (out of Talisman in Bristol), moving to London, Rodigan Barry G Capital dancehall clashes, Rock against racism, Carnival, and stuff like that.  Well the riddims on here remind me of all that, bring it all back, Rockers and Steppers, lazy roots and consciousness.

Top cuts like Barry Brown Them a come, Pass up the Chalice, Barrington Levy who became pre eminent in this time, Johnny Clarke’s heavy version of Wolves and Leopards and the excellent Fade away.  And Trinity was hard outta this stable, and Dillinger elsewhere.  And then there was the stabbing Jacob Miller, the absolute tops  (at the time )Black Uhuru, the distinctive hushed tones of Wayne Jarrett, And the wonderful harmonies of the Mighty Diamonds.

And what a track, that lazy heavy bass, mellow vocals, pensive lyrics on Johnny Clarke’s Everyday Wondering

Strictly Reggae Music…………We are Blessed.

Too Much Iron In The Fire compiles tracks recorded by the Jamaican producer between 1974 and a decade later, by which time Rocker's and Steppers sounds had given way to the stylings of early Dancehall. These little heard, but classic songs by the likes of Johnny Clarke, Black Uhuru, Barry Brown, Trinity, Ronnie Davis, The Mighty Diamonds and Winston Jarrett capture the heady excitement of this era to crucial effect, as well as tracing the journey of a producer who's played an important, if so far little-heralded, role in the development of Jamaican music.
