Better of Dread - A reggae collection – WNRD 2213
A thoroughly enjoyable compilation of various
reggae \DVD films and concerts.
Kicking off with the heavyweight Tosh from the
excellent film Stepping Razor Red X, complete with backing commentary and local
film. Later on in a more up to date stylee is the entertaining Buju
Banton’s take on the same subject. Continuing to hit hard with the gospel
driven live ska of toots and the Maytals, line at Santa Monica pier. An excellent recording in fact
retaining the feel and beat of the original disk.
Sublime is an odd inclusion, and amongst some
exalted company, is devoid of feel and full of noise. Fortunately it is just a short interlude.
Elsewhere I commend the film, available on
Wienerworld, Reggae in the Holy Land.
The cut Payday is included from that.
Live from London Astoria is the uplifting One
Binchi, Morgan Heritage, guaranteed to get your feet tapping and to put a smile
on your face. There is an
energetic Yellowman live. Also live in Jamaice is Half Pint with his tale of
financial hard times, cost of living.
Back to the older skool with a medley of heavy beats and crooning lazy
stylized loveness from Gregory Isaacs.
Also Don Carlos’s Cool Jonny Cool.
Another top film is Rockers, 70’s reggae rockers
at its very best Kiddus I’s studio opus Graduation in Zion from the film
together with the excellent staccato Jacob Miller and Inner Circle’s Tenement
Yard.
A crazy but OK piece, or at least a good vibe, is
Future Pigeon’s Illumination from the feature film Southlander.
