BabaBoom – Musically Intensified Festival Songs  TJDDD175

Interesting CD this in that it contains some of the top, most recognisable sounds and rhythms, some of the top artists, and some pretty formulaic copycat festival songs.

Great kick of with Bam Bam by the Maytals who our also featured  on several other tracks, though not as good as this intro.

Two of my top 3 favourite Ja vocalists are featured Derrick Harriott, though the tracks are weak and Pat Kelley who could sing over anything and it would sound good and it does on Festival Time.

No matter how twee I’m a sucker for the harmony groups so The Jamaicans Baba Boom does it for me every time and will lift any dancehall in any arena in any era, Feel alright by the Cables, the heavier gospel tones of the Maytals (and don’t you just love the abandon in the singalong on Sweet and Dandy it just gets me every time), the Techniques. Silvertones, Federals, Conquerors, Clarendonians, Tennors, Twinkles, Maytones and so on. Indeed it is this section that sells it for me.

The excellent Hopeton Lewis anthem Boom ShaKa laka

Other stalwarts started here desmond dekker, eric Donaldson, roy Shirley, Clancy Eccles, pioneers, Max Romeo, Junior Byles, derrick Morgan .  there is toastmasters (Uroy, Iroy, Dillinger), and rootsmen (Johny Clarke) so it’s a complete mix.

Great double set illustrating the movement in the music 1965 to 1975.

Despite the popularity and importance of the Festival song contest in terms of Jamaican culture, the event has only once before provided the focus for an album collection - and that was back in 1972. This compilation expands upon that historic LP to take in all the winners and major entries to the contest from the year of its inception through to the mid-seventies. The result is a celebration of some of the most joyous Rocksteady, Mento and Reggae recordings ever to see issue.
