SOUL UNDERGROUND - WALSALL - 2 November 2002

Now I'm afraid I don't get here as often as I would like but we took this one in and stayed over. Guest DJ for the night was Ralph Tee plus regulars Gavin Page, Lin Taylor and her son Jamie.

I must say that this is the kind of event I get enthusiastic about, it is what I want to hear when I go out, it is at the forefront, and once again it did not disappoint. I've left the review to long to remember what was played but in a sense that does not matter, it's the vibe and the quality that wins through.

Ralph and Gavin are just quality are rarely do they fail to deliver and tonight was no exception. Also refreshing to hear young Jamie in the mix.

Top night and I'll do a more measured review next time!

SOUL UNDERGROUND - WALSALL - 26 October

Comments taken from Modern Soul Website

Soul Underground last nite ..was very intimate (only about 50 of us in) but music and atmosphere wise was all I've ever hoped for, so a massive thanks to all involved.

It was nice to see so many people off list, Sean and Gail, Mo, Eddie,Des and friends, Dave L,Max and John,Mike and Dominique and Fish.

All the DJ's were so good last nite, not one of them put a foot wrong and the people there were so responsive and open minded that by the end of the nite I dont think there was anyone there that wasnt dancing!!!

We missed Roger last night ,I knew he had very heavy work commitments which in the end proved impossible for him ,it was a real shame cos he has bought so much good stuff recently that I know he wanted to play but never mind...he'll be back to support TJ next month thankfully!!

Anyway in view of Rog's absence I had to juggle the rota and do my first little "early doors" set ,eventually I did manage to work 4 decks and talk on the mic ...God knows what I played I was too busy worrying about the gear:-)

Sean has posted his playlist which was a great mix (Max where's yours???) Mike Stephens then played his set which had me running up to the decks every 2 minutes ..he was SO GOOD!!. Gav then did the first half of his set and as usual was totally "unpredictable" interspersing advanced releases with "charted" stuff like Love Times Love ..George Benson and that "bossa nova" thingy from the 50ts....wonderfully diverse..(I defy anyone to play you a better last set than Gavin Page) anyway he then generously doubled up as
Mike agreed to play some more tracks with him and I am so priviledged,it was just the most subliminal hour of music with everyone in the room on their feet.

Tracks from Mike that stunned me were an unreleased D'Influence feat. Shola Ama (unbelievable),Jamie Hawkins.. By My Side(unreleased) Faith Evans ..Faithfully (first play anywhere according to Mike ) and towards the end of the nite Gavin dropped Look Up Whats Comin Down ..REP ..I Can Tell By The Look In Your Eyes..Maze....Maurice J.. Beautiful Thang, Mica Paris ..Sixth Street ,which Mike followed with Public Announcement ..Step On (just perfectly suited to the venue!!)

Thanks to everyone for their words of encouragement and support both on the night and on list, you all loved the music and thats what counts. When I met up with Mike tonight he said how much he'd enjoyed it and that it was so nice for him to come out and play "proper soul music" ,he cant wait to come back and I cant ask for a better compliment!!

Ok for what its worth here's my little playlist..I mixed it up and just played a few personal favourites in no particular order:

Zhane So Badd
Glenn Jones 24/Seven
Grady Harrell Wrong Side Of Love
Merry Clayton Emotion
Groove Nation Slow Motion

The Affair Are You Ready
Alysha Warren I'm So In Love

Hi
an excellent set in a night of excellent sets.Pity there weren't more people because Lin,Max, Mike, Gavin and yourself made it musically one of the best modern sessions I've been to. Nice venue, good sound and Lin and Tait were very welcoming (thank you). This will now be a regular date in my diary and should be for all soul fans ( especially those who complain that everything's too garagey or RnB these days - and who I never see at events like last nights). Gavin and Mike at the end threw in some of the sweetest, most soulful tunes you'll hear out anywhere this year.

My respect and gratitude to all involved.
Mo

Just like to echo what Mo said ,a quite brilliant night from all the DJ's ,lots of new stuff and some inspired oldies .It was never dull ,and the freindly crowd created a great atmosphere , despite being a little low on numbers . Just like to say hello again to Sean , John Pugh , Sue and Hubby from " Crossover 2000 " , Dave Lucas , and of course Tait and Lin , who made our group's visit such a memorable one . Hope this venue gets the support it needs as it's a very special night in my opinion . Best Wishes ,Eddie.
