EVENTS
Fullest Brothers - 22 November 2002
Just a few words about this. I have been several times to this, it's small, just a soulful gathering of like minded people really, and for local charity.
Not sure who the organisers are really but I think it's principally Paul O'Brien, Hippo, Al Davidson. Mike Venn and Phil Taylor are also involved but who does the organising and who DJ's doesn't really matter too much.
Good variety of sounds including a set by Al's young daughter and it is always refreshing to see young blood on the scene, as we're all a bit long in the tooth!
Just a good friendly get together and nights like this don't happen often enough. Events don't have to be big, or heavy, or political, it's all about having fun....and good to meet Dave Flynn as well.
Hippo's review of Charity Event in Cheltenham Somerset Arms 28 September, from ANS site==
Well, different to the large dancefloor of the Saracens - this was the
second "Stompers 2001", in the back room of the Somerset Arms in Cheltenham,
so the emphasis was on good sounds, good beer and more of a chance to chat
rather than shout over the noise.....
DJ's for the night were Paul O'Brien, Phil Taylor, Al Davidson, Mike Venn,
myself, and our guest Dave Greet. Hopefully Al and Paul will post more
complete set lists over the weekend, as I kept getting distracted by that
Fuller's beer!
Phil and Paul warmed up with a double-header spot, Phil playing such as
Fabulous Appolas - Some good in everything bad (Valtone)
John Lucien - What a difference love makes (Columbia demo)
Donnie Elbert - Along came pride (Epic) - haven't heard for years!!
The Uptights - Shy Guy (Columbia demo)
Paul included
Bobby Williams - I've only got myself to blame (Sure shot)
Leslie Uggams - Don't you even care (Atlantic demo)
Garland Green - 40 days and nights (Revue)
Shalamars - Stop and take a look at yourself (Verve)
Mike Venn followed with some of his favourites including Clarence Murray -
Don't talk like that, Soulville All-stars - I'm gonna get to you, and Milton
Wright - The Gallop. Then came the first of two spots from Greety, giving
him a chance to stretch out with a few seventies things, most of which I
didn't know but Natural Four "Hanging on to a lie" was in there. Good stuff
though.
Al Davidson followed up with a fine spot including
The Diplomats - Crumbs off the table (Arock)
Soul Gents - Wonders of love (Fros Ray)
Ann Robinson - World of happiness
Shawn Robinson - My dear heart (Minit)
and the excellent Sidney Barnes biggie (but I've forgotten the title!)
Then came my turn, loads of requests, so I played
Art Posey - No more heartaches (Scope)
Kelly Brothers - Love Time (Sims demo)
Four Pro's - There must be a reason (Carla)
Duke Browner - Crying over you (Impact)
Barbara Mason - Bobby is my baby (Arctic) (crap lyrics, but wotta track)
The Ringleaders - Baby what has happened to our love (M-Pac)
Jimmy Ruffin - Everybody needs love (Tamla Motown)
Thelma Houston - I ain't going nowhere (Mowest)
Wooden Nickels - Nobody but you (Omen demo)
Malibus - Gee baby I love you (Sure shot)
Vala Reegan and the Valerons - Fireman (Atco demo)
Johnny Robinson - Gone but not forgotten (Okeh demo)
Bobby Williams - I've only got myself to blame (Sure shot)
The Inspirations - Your wish is my command (Midas)
Joan Moody - We must be doing something right (Sylvia)
Cindy Scott - I love you baby (Veep demo)
Marva Jones - I got your number (Ski-hi)
Billy Hambric - She said goodbye (Drum)
Rufus Lumley - Stronger than me (RCA LP)
........which left Dave Greet to finish with one of those spots where you
just go "oooh" at the quality! I know we sometimes sound like his publicity
agents, but eveything he played was pure class. He included the Ambers, Eula
Cooper, some brill stuff, and wrapped up with Herman Lewis - Who's kissing
you tonight and Esther Philips - Just say goodbye. Which we did, via the
kebab shop......
All in all an excellent night, all the usual Cheltenham reprobates in
attendance. We'll do another in January, but before that in two weeks time
Steve Whittle guests at the Saracens. See you there.
All this typing leaves me needing a pint of Gales HSB!!
