 Soul Heaven - Newquay - 16 December

Review by Lee Vowles and taken from ANS chat group

what a lovely day last sunday was.
john nightingale and polly his wife came for an early christmas lunch with me and my partner sue, hugs etc. exchange of gifts and that, then a lovely big feast and the consumption of red wine began. 2.00 pm leeds vs leicester fucking sky made me pay to view, oh well
£8.00 yo watch the game in the comfort of yown home whilst quaffing vats of rioja and shiraz seemed reasonable. city pulled off a cracking draw to come back from 2-0 down to wipe the smirk off of royston vaseys david o'leary.

nothing was gonna ruin my day now, more wine , quick bit of record selecting, and off to the venue to set up the gear and prepare for our night. i'd called it soul heaven on the back of a show i'd done on local radio station in the summer.
i know ther is a do with the same name in london, but it was just that t had used deep sensations soul heaven as my opening track, and that was that.

the night started very quietly, but newquay in winter is a ghost town. and nine days before christmas is a bit of a gamble really.
in the end the place got about 50 odd people in, and they were all up for it. very knowledgeable and very open minded.

i must thank mike ashley for making the journey from weston super mare, and his partner dominique. it was a trek for them, especially as they had to drive back and work the next day, after sitting up at johns 'til about 3.00 am. bless.

the actual d.j. line up was myself, mike ashley, and mike shy a.k.a. john nightingale.
music was as we planned right across the board, but we stuck mainly 70s-oos . mecca ritzy stuff, crossover ,rare groove/two step and a bit of soulful garage too.

mike played a lovely set, as did john. both keeping it nice and varied and blending rare stuff with not so rare gems.

mikes ruby winters- better on diamond going down really well, i'm sure mike and john will post play lists later, as i will as well, but this
posting is getting too long.

mike also played a bill withers track which i loved, probably the least rare record of the night, but a storming track.
flip side to aint no sunshine-harlem.... belting stuff.

john went right across, but for me the two that stand out were skip mahoney- janice, because of floor response, and the new roy ayers and masters at work 12" our time is coming. he played because it was brilliant.

management well chuffed, and asked if we'd do it weekly. i think that's a bit too optimistic, so we're going monthly.
next one sun jan 20th.

once again thanks to mike and dom for making the journey, and for mike doing a blinder. and to me old mucker john nightingale.

merry christmas to every single person on this list, i hope you get what you want, and i hope you want what you get.
peace and lurve.
