Exeter Soul Shoes 7 and Club News

Apologies for repeating ourselves but once again a massive thank you to everyone that turned out for Soulshoesseven at the Rougemont in Exeter last Saturday. We hope you agree that it just gets better and better and we're knocked out by the response to these events. A brilliant atmosphere all night due to the DJ's Terry, Pete Lyster (try to get over to his Bridgewater Soul nights if you can), Ken Dunn, Mick Lloyd and of course 'Hippo' all keeping the dancefloor full all night. An extra mention for Terry who saved the day when we had a scare with a faulty mixer early on and he cooly made a call on his mobile, problem solved 15 minutes later. Thanks Tel!

Our next event at the Rougemont is Saturday 10th May. We made the decision back in October that we would put the door entry up to £5 from May, not because we 're out to make a fast buck (!) but because we've been operating on a tight budget up to now and also we want to progress things by inviting more guest DJ's down which will of course add to the expenses. We've got Sean Chapman in May and following this in August we have invited Steve Whittle down from Wigan. We'll continue to include the local DJ's too, of course. So we hope you understand the small price increase, any complaints write to 'Watchdog' c/o BBC.

In the meantime we've been approached by a new club in Exeter (the Rocket, formerly The Printers Pie in Sidwell St.) to run one of their 2 rooms one Saturday a month playing Northern Soul. First do is Sat. Feb 15th with DJ's Paul O'Brien, Emma Cox, Paul Duncan and Ady Heaney, 8.00 till 1.30am.

OK cheers once again, see you.

Paul and Nic. Xx

----------------------------

Thanks Dave, glad you had a good time! We got there at around 9.20

to find the bar area already busy, and they just kept coming in!

Again, a real cross section of people, from students through to

diehard soulies, but all out for a good time. Nice to see lots of

vinyl for sale - I picked up a Parkway issue of "Eddie's my name"

and a Dolores Hall "Good lovin' woman" at nice prices, while Paul

O'b snatched up a Fred Hughes "Don't let me down" at a bargain price

- the seller obviously isn't on Soul talk or KTF or he'd know the

interest that's being generated in it again (bet it sounded good

over the Dome system David!).

The dance floor was busy from the time we arrived, and the numbers

through the door made this one the busiest yet. Loads of R & B got

played, mixed in with old favourites, and by 11.30 the atmosphere

was superb as Mick Lloyd had 'em jumping with things like Harold

Melvin "Prayin'", Bobby womacks "Home is where the heart is", Major

Lance "You don't want me no more" and that Joe Tex R & B track on

Dial that's getting talked about a lot at the moment. Good lad, he

handed me a full dance floor at midnight with the Supremes "He's all

I got". Dave, you say that last hour was the best you've ever had,

well, I came off stage at 1am saying just about the same thing - I

love to see that dance floor rockin', and that's what it did! Here's

the playlist:

Billy Butler - Right track (Okeh)

Tobi Lark - Happiness is here (Topper)

Rose Battiste - Help me baby (C/Up)

The Younghearts - A little togetherness (Canterbury)

Detroit Executives - Cool off (Pameline)

The Chalfontes - He loves me (Mercury)

The Vel-vets - I got to find me somebody (20th century)

The Hesitations - I'm not built that way (Kapp)

The Satisfactions - Take it or leave it (Smash)

Eddie Holman - Eddie's my name (Parkway)

Butch Baker - The Fat man (St. Lawrence)

Carstairs - It really hurts me girl (Red Coach)

Fern Kinney - Sweet Devil (Atlantic)

Nolan Chance - Just like the weather (Constellation)

Johnnie Mae Matthews - Lonely you'll be (Jam)

Bobby Hutton - Lend a hand (ABC)

Jr. Walker - Ain't that the truth (Soul)

Epitome of sound - You don't love me (Sandbag)

Rose Battiste - Help me baby (C/Up) (second time out!)

The Adorables - Ooh boy (Golden World)

The Inspirations - Your wish is my command (Midas)

Brenda Holloway - When I'm gone (Tamla)

The ovation at the end showed that the punters had enjoyed it as

much as I had; people were sort of milling around with big grins on

their faces, it was just a real feelgood atmosphere. Then it was

down to the local KFC (nipped in just before the Watchet minibus

arrived and took over the place!) and an easy drive back up the M5

to Cheltenham with a tape of semi-knowns on; home for 3.30am, so

what do I do? A wash, a coffee, and start cleaning up and playing

the nights purchases! Old after-niter habits die hard!

Once again, thanks to promoters Paul and Nicky, and to all the

people who turned up and made Soulshoesseven such a wicked night!

Hippo.

Exeter Soul Shoes 6 - October 2002 by Jerry Hipkiss, and playlists from Nick and Dawn Brown

Just to say what an excellent night at Exeter Soulshoes last Saturday! Though he's too modest to say so himself (plus he's having eyewatering problems with his modem!) Paul O'Brien really kicked the dance floor up a gear, having taken over from Emma Cox who's unashamedly populist so great for getting things going. Dawn followed that, and Mick Lloyd kept things going till midnight when Nick Brown took over - read the crowd well, kicked in with the Marvelettes "I'll keep holding on" and mixed it up well to keep 'em on the floor cheering at the end!

Of Nicks spot mention has to be made of Cecil washington "My proposal", the Jackie Lee track, and (of course!) the extra-length re-edit of Luther Ingram vocal/instr!! Over 220 through the doors made it the best yet; the crowd consists of soulies of all levels, some who just want to hear their favourites through to the diehards, but I have to say that they're a pretty open-minded lot and don't all pile off the floor at the first note of a track they don't have on CD!!!

Congrats to Paul and Nicky on a great venue; looking forward to February when I hope I'm guesting again!!

Exeter Soul Shoes 5 - Devonshire Suite - Rougemont Thistle Hotel, Queen St Exeter 10 August - by Jerry 'Hippo' Hipkiss (and Paul Hellier).

(Review of Soul Shoes 4 remains under)

Where do I start.............Ok, Saturday night on the M5 once again, only this time heading South West for Exeter. First sign of a good night was being overtaken by a car with an Okeh sticker in the rear window - Gloucester crowd are on their way down as well! Picked up Paul O'Brien at Tiverton services and by the time we head into Exeter I'm getting just as excited as I always do for a Northern event. Rightly so.....the venue is the Rougemont, a Thistle hotel in the heart of the city. Plush, deep carpets, nice vibe - and that was just the corridors! And the room - let's just say many venues would die for it, and it FEELS like an NS venue. Long, dark and with a dance floor running the whole length. Dump the box, say
hello to promoters Paul and Nicky (what a great couple) and to Worcesters Mick Lloyd, who's on before me, and chat to loads of good people. Over 170 in, a mixture of exiled Midlands/Northeners, grizzly dudes who made me feel young, local NS fans and mods....not to mention some gorgeous women. No "tourists", all there for the right reasons, can't go wrong! Three or four car loads from Gloucestershire, and, surprisingly, Stroud mobile jock Andy Edwards, who'd taken his family to Dorset on holiday on one condition...so they were tucked up in bed upstairs while he was downstairs giving the dance floor some stick!

Three or four of the local jocks warmed the night up nicely, and while this isn't a purists night they're up for it - Motown, R & B, the current 70's biggies, traditional faves, all had them going well. Mick Lloyds second spot (he swore he wasn't trying to clear the floor for me by playing a couple of beat ballads!) ended at midnight with Dean Courtneys "I'll always
need you" (Black RCA issue).Mick's set in no particular order:
Clydene Jackson-I Need Your Love
Temptations-Girl,Why You Wanna Make Me Blue
Velvelettes-Lonely Lonely Girl Am I
Jackie Wilson-I've Lost you
Coasters-Girl Crazy
George Smith-I've Had It
Charles Sheffield-It's Your Voodoo Working
Darrow Fletcher-The Pain Gets a Little Deeper
Tommy Navarro-I Cried MY Life Away
Valentinos-Sweeter Than the Day Before
Richard Berry-Have Love, Will Travel
Larry Saunders-On the Real Side
Metros-Since I Found My Baby
Ben E. King-I Can't Break the News
Jack MOntgomery-Dearly Beloved
George Carrow-Angel Baby
Dean Courtney-I'll Always Need You
Bobby Hutton-Come See
Mary Love-You Turned My Bitter Into Sweet
Isleys-Why When Love is Gone
Sam Moore-Pretty Good Lovin'
7th Avenue Aviators-You Should of Held On

Then it was my turn. Now I keep my records in alphabetical order, so apart from the first three I played, that's how they are. And anyway, you can have fun working out which order you would have played them in.......I was having too much fun to remember myself - talk about buzzin'!

Marlena Shaw - Let's wade in the water (Cadet)
Duke Browner - Crying over you (vocal) (Impact).
Al Greene - Don't leave me (Hot Line Music journal).
Larry Atkins - Ain't that love enough (Highland)
Billy Butler - Right Track (Okeh)
Alfreda Brockington - Spilt milk (Philly archives)
Brice Coefield - Ain't that right (Omen)
Contours - Just a little misunderstanding (Gordy)
Carol and Gerri - How can I ever find the way (MGM demo)
Carstairs - It really hurts me girl (Red Coach)
Bobby Hutton - Lend a hand (ABC)
Joy Lovejoy - In orbit (Chess)
Chuck Jackson - Hand it over (Wand)
Lou Johnson - Unsatisfied (Big Top)
Pat Lundy - Soul ain't nothing but the blues (Columbia demo)
Major Lance - Investigate (Okeh demo)
Johnnie Mae Matthews - Lonely you'll be (Jam)
Malibus - Gee Baby I love you (Sure Shot)
Natural Four - I thought you were mine (ABC)
Sonny Stitt - Concerto for jazz lovers (Wingate demo)
Spellbinders - Help me (Columbia)
Ike and Tina Turner - Dust my broom (Tengerine)
Wonderettes - I feel strange (United Artists demo)

As you can imagine after that mixture of requests, old faves and a couple of well-received but lesser played things, the night finished on a high. Next one is October 26th with Nick and Dawn from Scenesville in London guesting - miss it at your peril - and Paul and Nicky have promised I can come back next year - I can't wait! And then it was back to the motorway and home for 4 in the morning, and just to sum up what kind of night it was, when we got to Taunton Dene services Ray Jackson found that he had dropped his wallet at the hotel....we spoke to the night porter and the
next morning had a phone call to say that they had the wallet, cash and all. Sort of restores your faith in human nature a little, doesn't it!

Anyway, the message is simple - YOU MISS SOULSHOESSIX AT YOUR PERIL!!

Once again to Paul and Nicky and the whole Southwest crew, thanks...and can
I come back soon???

Exeter Soul Shoes 4 - Devonshire Suite - Rougemont Thistle Hotel, Queen St Exeter 18 May

I had heard good things about this venue, and that at Soul Shoes 3 there were 170 people in. On visiting I was not disappointed although the numbers were slightly down on that, probably due to a large Scooter Rally in Newquay.

The Room is a good size with an excellent dancefloor almost as big as the room with good seating around, and a large bar area which is good for socialising. Good stage and ample sound system installed. Paul Hellier and Nic should be commended for putting this together and I wish it continued success. Next one on 10 August.

Mick Lloyd excepted I was not that familiar with the DJ's too much. Mick as usual doing a solid set, ably assisted by Phil Rockey from Barnstaple. Kev (from Cheltenhan or Gloucester I think), but not sure did an excellent set including a sprinkling of more modern sounds. Pete from Plymouth kept things pumping. All in all it was basically Northern but a fair sprinkling of R'n'B, mostly pretty well known but each DJ able to include some lesser known material.

I was on last and my playlist was as follows:

Better Ruby Winters

What are you trying to do Irma Thoma

Dearest One Lamont Dozier

I dig everything about you Mob

I got to love you Jesse Boone & Astros

Girl across the street Moses Smith

Surprise Party for Baby Vibrating Vibrations

Be young be foolish be happy Tams

I don't love you no more Exsaveyons

Never gonna let you go Jobell & Orchestra de Salsa

Love guess who Martha Reeves & Vandellas

You got the love I need Undisputed Truth

Little young lover Five Stairsteps & Cubie

Let me love yuh Innersectrion

Seven Day lover James Fountain

Keep on Running away Bits'n Pieces

My baby's got ESP Four below zero

Check it baby Willie & Mighty Magnificents

If thats what you wanted Frankie Beverly

This thing called love Johnny Wyatt

Harlem Bill Withers

Walking up a one way street Willie Tee

Got to get rid of you LV Johnson

Great night and I am sure I'll return.
