Edwin Starr - Bierkeller Bristol 10th November 2002
We've all seen Edwin Starr 101 times before, we all know that he always gives 100%, we all know that we will not go home disappointed with the performance. It is disappointing that Edwin was so let down by the Bristol crowd and had to play to an audience of probably less than 50.
I don't know what it is about Bristol, we can get 500 to a Northern Soul Night (Thekla), 1200 to a 70's 80's event (Soul Train), 1000 to a soul current and revival event (Dimensions), and yet we can't get 50 people out on a Sunday Night. The Soul scene in Bristol is strong but somehow it just don't mix.
Edwin was excellent as we knew he would be, all the usuals, double 0 soul, War, Contact, 25 miles and so on. Edwin got the whole audience up and dancing. He's a professional and we know what all this is all about. Two pints that I was impressed with are as follows:-
1) His young band The Team, all youngsters, must be a 12 piece or so. In fact it was joked that there were more on stage than in the audience........but they are good, really good, very refreshing
2) Edwin did a couple of numbers that I didn't expect Let's Stay Together and I've never found a girl. They were brilliantly done and shows that he can still cut it as a vocalist. So good to hear aside from all the predictable stuff
