COOLY's HOT BOX - JAZZ CAFE - 21 November 2001

The debut UK appearance of Cooly's Hot Box was waiting with great anticipation as I have gone on record as saying that their current CD is one of the pick's of the year.

And we were not disappointed - this was a cracking night from when they hit the stage through to the final note. The sound was crisp and the seven piece outfit were hard and tight and pretty much faultless.

Led by Angela and Christian (Cooly) this was an immense performance and next time they come make every effort to be there. Angela exudes style and class and her vocal ability and stage presence shone through, ably supported by an excellent backing singer (sorry don't know the names).

Most of the current album was covered starting off in a kicking fashion with 'It's alright'. They changed tempos and introduced instrumental changes and nuances with professional ease.

Then there were mood and style changes where instrumentally every player was superb. This shone through in these jazz laden lengthy interludes.

Then Angela took the keyboard for a spine tingling, sole performance and almost acoustic 'I'm in love with you'

Special mention for Cooly's percussion break - rarely would such a thing get a mention by me but it was outrageous and funny mixing percussive patterns with body movement, facial expressions and vocals.......amazing.

Closing with an encore of 'Simple' and indeed they made it seem so, but the best always do.

A top night indeed.

The entire band were exceptionally nice people, spending time with the crowd, having flown in only a couple of days previously and flying off the following day.

Thanks to Peter and Santosh from Dome - can't wait for the return.
