10th Northern Soul Weekender. Friday 14th June-Sunday 16th June 02.

Dear All

Our first time at Cleethorpes and very impressive it was too. Although that is to be expected when you take into account this successful weekender has been running for 10 years organised by Ady Croasdell.

Plenty on offer to appeal to all. The main room catered to the tastes of the Northern crowd. DJ's included all the usual suspects Roger Banks, Shifty, Soul Sam, Ginger Taylor, Mick Smith, Dave Rimmer etc. at different times of the weekend. The Modern Room had a different atmosphere all it's own, a cool welcoming vibe (man) which remained there all weekend so it was great to dip in and out of. There was also a third smaller room at the top of the building which housed DJ's from the London scene's These Old Shoes, Scenesville and the Capital Soul Club etc. (this room was hotter 'n hell and we couldn't stay up there for more than a couple minutes). We know some that stuck it out and consequently had a great time there. Our loss I guess.

Toons that we can remember (!) 'Lay My Cards on the Table'-The Diplomats, 'I'm Comin' Home Baby' -Dee Dee Sharpe, 'Hey You' -Montclairs, 'Voodoo Woman'- Charles Sheffield, 'Say Something Nice to Me' Bobby Kline, 'Don't Send Nobody Else'-Ace Spectrum.

Saturday afternoon spent watching England stuffing Denmark 3-0.

2 live acts on the Saturday night. Firstly Dennis Coffey the Detroit session guitarist stormed through 3 instrumental numbers which were probably too much on the funky side for most punters in the room but full chunky chords and a cool groove from the man did not fail to impress.

The backing band stayed on stage to ably do the business for the night's top act The Velvelettes. Right from the opener 'Really Saying Something' the 3 girls had the crowd on their side and they clearly enjoyed themselves performing to such an appreciative audience. All the crowd pleasers were given an airing ' Lonely Lonely Girl Am I', 'A Bird in the Hand is Worth Two in the Bush', 'These Things Will Keep Me Loving You' and 'Needle in a Haystack' (which started with the first verse sung Gospel style complete with Church style keyboard accompaniment that sounds cheesy on paper but worked well in practice).

All in all a memorable event which we will definitely be returning to in the future.

Wish you were here.

Love

Paul and Nic.
