Angela Johnson - They don't know - CD32

This is an exceptional album - love it. It is not particularly instant, and certainly less instant than the Cooly's one. But it wins in all departments. The songs, the singing, the production, everything.

There is hardly a poor track, whether slow, uplifting, jazzy, soul, gospel. This one's already gathering plaudits and the hype around it is growing by the minute, and for once absolutely justified. Gonna be up there amongst the albums of the year, like Cooly's was last time. Brief track by track analysis follows:-

'Rescue Me' - very strong opening cut, upbeat, and getting dancefloor action. Modern Soul outing, good pace and catchy chorus, one that sticks in your head.

'After it's gone' - another one for the clubs but this ones totally different, beatier, bit more R'nB, harder cut altogether, excellent stuff.

'Sad Days' - the more you play this album the better it becomes. Cuts you maybe passed on first time around, or second.....will get through. This one is now sounding so strong. Again fairly beaty but not so heavy, pleading personal (one assumes) lyrics. Soulful.

'No Better love' - who's this? Betty Wright Denise Lasalle. Femme Soul from an earlier era complete with string arrangement and shoobe doobe doo's. Awesome.

'Crying over u' - downbeat and deep, strong strong vocals, hurtful, bluesy but gospel to and hey a bit of jazz to. It's all there and not a dry eye in the house!

'They don't know' the title track, and this another that grows and grows, with string arrangements and horns too. Nice trombone and keyboard break!

'Ordinary things' Haunting catchy hook, kicking in on a neo soul outing

'Call' - I wonder if this one's gonna be just Angela and piano, with backing vocals in the show when it gets here. Showcase Angela I would reckon.

'Won't say sorry' - heavy chorus on this over a current day kind of soul groove.

'Some kinda wonderful' - this is kinda nice, funkier beat with the vocal hitting the higher echelons behind it.

'Don't wanna be the one' - spoken intro into a midtempo jazz piano, jazzy horns kick in later.

'Kissing you' a kind of lilting neo soul ballad.

'I still care' is midtempo with a heavy beat and one for the dancefloor, bit old skool chorus over meaningful lyrics and strong vocal. I can see the remixes coming on this one for sustained action and reaction.

'Money don't grow on trees' This one produced by DJ Spinna and a hint of Badu in here both lyrically and in style, over a benson-esque jazz guitar. Jazz influenced but modern day soul as well.

Altogether a top, top album. Angela sure can deliver. An hour of pure pleasure, passion and pain.
